Wipeout 1 insta-crashes on all settings on shield tablet

I have fpse on my 32gb Nvidia shield 4G LTE tablet. No matter what the settings are Wipeout 1 instantly crashes the emulator without even an error message. I can't attempt it in software mode as when I attempt to change the renderer the change is never saved (emulator is stuck in opengl mode for all eternity). I really wish to play this game for nostalgic reasons and although it runs on epsxe on android the sound is bugged to the Max rendering it unplayable. Is there ANY way to get this game to work? Also wipeout XL just boots to an endless black screen no matter how I try to set it up. Only Wipeout 3 seems to run for me.
